Dietetic Internship


The Dietetic Internship (DI) is a graduate-level advanced certificate program that prepares students to sit for the Registration Examination for Dietitians. Through coursework and supervised clinical experiences, students are equipped with the skills and knowledge to serve communities through the promotion of optimal nutrition, health and well-being. The need for dietetics practitioners is expected to increase as the health care community places a greater emphasis on the benefits of healthy eating, disease prevention and medical nutrition therapy. Upon successful completion of the Dietetic Internship, a Certificate of Advanced Studies is awarded, and students are eligible to sit for the Registration Examination for Dietitians. Upon passing the Registration Examination for Dietitians, a student will become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (R.D.N.).

Program Mission
The Dietetic Internship program has been planned by the Nutrition Faculty to be in accord with the mission and goals of our organization and the standards set forth by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), and the Standards of Professional Performance of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The Dietetic Internship emphasizes educational experience and prepares an intern to progress from a student to a professional. In addition to theoretical knowledge, our interns benefit from extensive experiential education provided by many professional resources on Long Island and the New York City area. The interns develop professional attitudes, values and competence in a variety of learning environments including health care facilities, food service operations, and community agencies. The program promotes the attainment of critical and expressive abilities, ethical practice, and self-assessment skills. During their development as competent professionals, interns will learn decision-making and leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate with colleagues. Our learning environment is supportive of an individual's needs and encourages self-development and a commitment to life-long learning.


Program Goals
  • To prepare dietetic interns who meet the requirements for entry-level dietetics practice. 
  • To produce practitioners who will have the necessary skills and leadership in various settings, to contribute to professional practice and who participate in lifelong learning. 
Student Learning Outcomes
The didactic curriculum and the supervised practice will prepare the student to:
  • Integrate scientific information and research into practice.
  • Develop beliefs, attitudes and behaviors for the professional dietitian nutritionist level of practice.
  • Develop and deliver information, products and services to individuals, groups and populations.
  • Apply principles of management and systems in the provision of services to individuals and organizations.

The Dietetic Internship offers a Medical Nutrition Therapy and Health & Wellness concentration areas which comprises 14 credits: 6 graduate credits in the supervised practice and 8 graduate credits in classroom coursework for a total of 1200 hours. The application and admission requirements are the same for both concentration areas.

The DI is affiliated with more than 80 facilities in Long Island and Queens and includes a variety of experiences to give the intern a broad view of the field of dietetics. Sites include hospitals, community centers, long-term care facilities, dialysis and ambulatory care units and food service organizations. Each intern will experience eight rotations that are tailored to individual preferences and past experiences. Graduate coursework that complement the supervised practice is also part of the program.

Students wishing to apply to the Dietetic Internship must have a baccalaureate degree and have completed a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) that has been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Students with a degree in another discipline must satisfy the requirements of a DPD prior to application to the Dietetic Internship.

Students may choose to complete only the Advanced Certificate program and are not required to complete the M.S. in Nutrition.

**All clinical students, residential students, and intercollegiate athletes are automatically enrolled in the Aetna Health Plan but can waive participation online if they have comparable coverage under a family plan or other policy. All remaining students are not automatically enrolled but eligible to purchase the same Plan on a voluntary basis for the entire policy year. Health insurance usually covers physical examinations with copay or a deductible expense.

Financial Assistance

LIU Post’s Financial Assistance Office, located in Kumble Hall, provides assistance for students who need loans, grants and work-study to pay for tuition and other college expenses. It also provides one-on-one financial aid counseling and information about obtaining scholarships and other financial assistance. To apply for financial aid, you must annually file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is processed and a Student Aid Report (SAR) is generated and mailed or e-mailed to the student. New York State residents should also file the Tuition Assistance (TAP) Application which can be accessed at the completion of the online FAFSA application.

Dietetic Internship Academic Calendar

The DI includes graduate coursework and supervised practice experiences that are completed in two academic semesters. The program begins in September with NTR 611, Concepts for Nutrition Practice. The supervised practice rotations are completed Tuesday through Friday from mid-September to early June and total 1152 hours (32 hours per week for 36 weeks).

Graduation and Completion Requirements

Each student in the LIU Post Dietetic Internship will be graded on their academic and clinical work. The grading policy will follow the LIU policy for grades, as stated in the Graduate Bulletin 2017-2018. For more information on graduation and completion requirements, see the DI Manual.

Submitting an Application for Admission

The deadline for applying for the Dietetic Internship is February 15th for Fall entry. Requirements for admission to the Dietetic Internship include prior completion of the DPD academic requirements of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

To apply for admission, please follow these steps:

1. Dietetic Internship Application

Applicant must complete a Dietetic Internship application from the Dietetic Internship Centralized Application System (DICAS). Application will be available in December for the February 15 deadline. There will be a $45 fee for the first application and $20 for each additional dietetic internship application.

The following information will also be part of DICAS:

  • Official Undergraduate transcripts for proof of baccalaureate degree or master’s degree and Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) requirements. Applicants who will have not completed their degrees prior to admission deadlines should submit a transcript without the final semester's grades. Such applicants may be accepted pending receipt of their final degree noted transcripts. Submit one copy of official transcripts from all other institutions attended, including other graduate programs
  • Three letters of recommendation (preferably two from student's undergraduate or graduate nutrition program, and one from a work employer)
  • One copy of Declaration of Intent to complete the degree and minimal Academic Requirements or one copy of the Verification Statement
  • Personal statement to include the following:
    • Why you want to enter the dietetic profession
    • Discuss experiences that have helped you prepare for your career
    • Your short and long term goals
    • Your strengths and weaknesses or areas needing improvement
  • 3.0 GPA

2. Computer Matching Process

Complete the computer matching process with D & D Digital ($55 fee).

3. LIU Online Application for Admission

Applicants must complete the LIU Online application. The application can be obtained by selecting the Apply Now button in the lower left hand corner of this page. You can also request that a graduate application be mailed to you by calling 516-299-2900 or e-mailing post-enroll@liu.edu.
