Long Island University (LIU) was founded in 1926 in Brooklyn, N.Y., under the guiding principle of educating and empowering men and women from all walks of life. LIU has grown into one of the nation’s largest private Universities, and remains committed to the educational needs and interests of its diverse student body. LIU offers more than 500 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degree programs and certificates, educating more than 20,000 students each year across multiple campuses. The University continuously strives to cultivate and expand academic, professional, artistic, and co-curricular opportunities.
The university expanded in 1951, when it purchased the estate of Mrs. Joseph P. Davis – better known as Marjorie Merriweather Post – to better meet the educational needs of the growing number of families moving to the suburbs. Just 27 miles east of New York City on Long Island’s idyllic Gold Coast, LIU Post is a scenic, historic, and scholarly campus that offers a small-school environment, but with the access and resources of a major metropolitan university. LIU Post offers more than 200 undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and certificate programs. The campus is a leader in cultivating entrepreneurial spirit in our students through a high-tech startup incubator and student-run businesses that include a full-service clothing boutique, and sports lounge. LIU Post’s 308-acre grounds is home to the world-renowned Tilles Center for the Performing Arts and the Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium, where students, alumni, family, and friends gather to cheer on the Pioneers’ top ranked NCAA Division II athletics programs.
LIU Brooklyn continues to enable students to realize their full potential as ethically grounded, intellectually vigorous, and socially responsible global citizens. The campus offers more professional programs in health care than any other single campus in the New York metropolitan area, including the Arnold and Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy & Health Science, the only university-based academic nursing center in Brooklyn. The Harriet Rothkopf Heilbrunn School of Nursing boasts a state-of the-art simulation learning laboratory, made possible through a generous gift from the Heilbrunn family, where nursing students actively participate in on-campus intensive learning immersion scenarios. LIU Brooklyn is also home to Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts, a dynamic performance venue designed to nourish students’ artistic exploration while providing the community with greater access to an exciting range of professional performances.
LIU Global offers a one-of-a-kind bachelor’s degree education without borders. LIU Global’s immersive learning experience spans eight countries on four continents, preparing students for careers as global leaders in business, policy, humanitarian relief, social entrepreneurship, economic development, and environmental sustainability.
From the shores of Long Island, to the epicenter of business and tech innovation in Brooklyn, to the far corners of the world, LIU offers a unique college experience for every student seeking academic enrichment and professional opportunity. Upon graduation, our students join a community of more than 200,000 alumni to become global leaders in fields that include the arts, health sciences, media, education, pharmacy, business, technology, public service, and professional sports.
Long Island University's mission is to provide excellence and access in private higher education to people from all backgrounds who seek to expand their knowledge and prepare themselves for meaningful, educated lives and for service to their communities and the world.

LIU’s motto is Urbi et Orbi – “To the City and to the World.”
