Lynette M. Phillips

Lynette M. Phillips, Vice President for Legal Services and University CounselLynette M. Phillips, vice president for legal services and university counsel, is responsible for the legal affairs of the University, including advice on legal issues arising from the University’s daily operations, managing external litigation and agency complaints, and preventative law initiatives.

Ms. Phillips, who joined the University in 2010, holds a B.A. with honors from the Johns Hopkins University and a J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law. She brings to the Office of University Counsel a distinguished background in the public and private sectors.

First working for Maryland’s Departments of Legislative Reference and Labor, Licensing and Regulation, Lynette soon moved to DLA Piper’s Baltimore office, where she specialized in employment and commercial litigation and advice. She transferred to Piper’s New York office in 1993, later joining the Attorney General’s Education Division.

From there, she joined Stony Brook University, where, in addition to litigation activities, she coordinated the purchase of the Southampton Campus, the acquisition of the R&D Park and development of the Simons Center and hotel construction gifts. In addition, she counseled staff and senior management on faculty, human resource and student-life matters, international programs, procurement, scholarly misconduct, University governance, risk management, public safety, policy development and regulatory compliance issues.
