SOCIAL WORK

Scholarship Opportunities

Overview

The Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (SDS) program provides $650,000 in annual scholarships to full-time, financially needy students from disadvantaged backgrounds, enrolled in a Master of Social Work (MSW) program at Long Island University.  The maximum award in SDS funds is $30,000 per academic year and is renewable if funds are available and program criteria are met.  Applicants should be advised that student loans may be reduced to accommodate SDS awards.  Awards can be applied to Summer, Fall, and/or Spring terms. No financial aid awards may exceed the estimated cost of attendance. Eligibility for an award does not guarantee a scholarship, as funding is limited.

Eligibility Requirements

Scholarships can only be awarded to students from a “disadvantaged background,” defined by the program as a student who:

  • Comes from an environment that has inhibited the individual from obtaining the knowledge, skill, and abilities required to enroll in and graduate from a health professions or nursing school; or
  • Comes from a family with an annual income below a level based on low-income thresholds according to family size published by the U.S. Bureau of Census, adjusted annually for changes in the Consumer Price Index, and adjusted by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, for use in health professions and nursing programs.
