M.S. in Medical Biology
M.S. in Medical Biology
Medical biology professionals produce the information necessary to diagnose, assess, prevent and treat disease states. With more than 70 percent of treatment decisions by physicians based on laboratory findings, medical biologists are vital cornerstones of modern health care.
The 36-credit Master of Science Program in Medical Biology at the LIU Post offers advanced courses in the biomedical sciences for certified and NYS-licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientists who perform diagnostic laboratory tests necessary to diagnose, assess, prevent and treat disease states. The M.S. in Medical Biology is ideal for Clinical Laboratory Scientists seeking promotion to management positions and for preparation for further study at the doctoral level. This program also provides advanced courses in the biomedical sciences for individuals with BS degrees who are seeking acceptance into post-graduate professional schools (e.g. medical or dental school) or students seeking a career in basic science research.
This degree may also lead to positions in health education, health care agencies, medical, pharmaceutical laboratories, management information systems or biomedical research in the public or private sectors. Students pursue courses that examine normal and diseased states of the human body including pathophysiology, biomedical research, and body fluid chemistries and blood cell dyscrasias. Students choose one of four specializations – hematology, immunology, medical chemistry or medical microbiology. These courses constitute 12 credits of the core curriculum, which includes completion of a thesis. Four courses are recommended in each specialty; two courses are considered electives. This program is recognized for graduating competent and knowledgeable professionals in the vital field of Medical Biology.
Applicants seeking employment in a clinical laboratory that performs diagnostic blood tests needs to become a certified and licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), and must apply to the MS CLS program. Please contact the CLS Program Director Anthony Capetandes, PhD, MT(ASCP) at anthony.capetandes@liu.edu or 516-299-3039 for additional details and visit the dedicated MS CLS website: http://liu.edu/CWPost/Academics/Schools/SHPN/Dept/Biomedical/Graduate-Programs/MS-CLS.aspx
