B.S. in Biomedical Sciences with Specialization in Cytotechnology

B.S. in Biomedical Sciences with Specialization in CytotechnologyCytotechnology is the microscopic study of cells for evidence of disease. Working with sophisticated microscopes, cytotechnologists evaluate cell samples to detect cancer, precancerous legions, benign tumors and infectious processes. They perform a crucial role in patient health-care, which carries a high level of responsibility and impact.

Students pursuing the 134-credit Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences with a specialization in Cytotechnology attend the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University for three years of undergraduate study, followed by a 12-month internship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in its hospital-based CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) accredited program. Located in New York City, Sloan-Kettering is a world-renowned institution for diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Students must apply directly to Sloan-Kettering during the junior year and are selected based on a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and a successful interview.

Completion of the CAAHEP Cytotechnology Program allows students to take the ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) certification examination for the Cytotechnologist (CT) and to apply for New York State licensure as a Cytotechnologist, a requirement to practice in New York State.
