Message from the Dean
Thank you for visiting the Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (LIU Pharmacy) website. Founded in 1886, as the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy, we are very proud of our predominant history and the many outstanding contributions made in science and medicine over the decades. We are proud of the numerous achievements that are directly attributed to our alumni, such as Ian Ginsberg, President and Owner, C.O. Bigelow, Howard Murad, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Murad, the leader in skincare science, Howard Sternheim, President and Founder, Thriftway Drugs, William de Neergaard, founder of Neergaard Pharmacy, the first 24 hour pharmacy in NYC, and Richard Neimeth, who invented citrate of magnesia, as well as the exceptional students who are admitted annually and continue our tradition of excellence.
We are fortunate to find ourselves in New York City which, in the view of many, is simply the epicenter. The epicenter of what? If not actually all things than unquestionably healthcare. I do not believe there are any limits. Innovation is boundless. Within our own walls you will find talented and dedicated faculty, administrators and staff, a brilliant multicultural student body, state-of-the art laboratories and learning centers, and the can-do attitude of the New Yorker, bonum publicum. And our extended family includes an outstanding array of preceptors, adjunct faculty, and benefactors, as well as solid affiliations with medical centers and corporations that are second to none in the world. We hope you will agree there is good reason for our pride in LIU Pharmacy. We hope some of you will join us as we continue our quest for preeminence.
As you would expect for any organization in existence for over 125 years, evolution and reinvention is a never-ending process. As you can see, very recently, the curriculum for our PharmD program has been restructured to address the new challengers of 21st century pharmacy practitioners, the Neimeth student lounge has been completed, and new faculty members are joining our team. All of this, along with three new notable research Institutes affiliating with the College within the last five years, has taken the college major strides forward. What you cannot see right now is the vibrancy of many activities going on behind the scenes. Through focused strategic planning, we are exploring new degree options, more extensive international opportunities, enhanced commitment to research and development, and so much more. I encourage you to visit this site on a regular basis to keep abreast of these exciting developments.
Although I am new to the LIU family, it gives me pride to serve as only the ninth academic dean in our long and distinguished history. Along with this honor comes great responsibility. I am committed to assuring the next 125 years of LIU history will be as illustrious as the first.
Finally, as Dean of the College, I encourage and welcome your comments and suggestions. With solid support from our President, Dr. Kimberly R. Cline, the upper administration of LIU, and the LIU Pharmacy Board of Overseers, as well as the strong commitment of LIU Pharmacy personnel, we are poised to be quick and nimble. Change is on the horizon and we are moving toward that horizon at breakneck speed.
