Professional Phase (years P-3 – P-6)

The Pharm.D. curriculum begins with two years of pre-professional studies (years 1-2) in the liberal arts and sciences. The pre-professional core curriculum of courses in the physical and biological sciences and mathematics is combined with humanities and social sciences to provide a foundation for the academic rigor of the professional phase of the Pharm.D. program, as well as a common and universally accepted body of knowledge and understanding of human concerns that will apply in students’ professional and personal lives.

Students who enter LIU Brooklyn in the pre-professional phase begin a course of liberal arts and sciences that is specifically designed to prepare students for the professional phase. If you plan to transfer from another institution, please be sure to work closely with your college academic advisor to select courses that correspond with LIU Pharmacy’s Pre-Professional plan of study. Wherever you are completing your Pre-Professional studies you should plan on completing those requirements in the spring semester prior to fall semester you desire to begin your studies in the professional program.

If you have or will have an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university prior to beginning the professional phase of the Pharm.D. program, you will need all the required science and math courses. However, because you will have met the other requirements for another college degree, any combination of 24 credits in English, social sciences, and/or humanities with a grade of ‘C’ or higher will complete the prerequisite course requirements.

To be eligible for application review and admission consideration, applicants must have a GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) for cumulative and science, or better, at the time of the PharmCAS application deadline and thereafter. However, depending upon the quantity and quality of applications received and because the College of Pharmacy offers only a limited number of seats for the professional program, a more competitive GPA may be required for consideration. Preference will be given to students with a grade point average of 3.0 or greater in the science pre-professional courses. Students must complete all pre-pharmacy prerequisite coursework with a C- (C minus) grade or better to be competitive.
