Short Biography

After completing his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Shah joined LIU as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2012.
Dr. Shah’s research interest is in the area of Health Service Research, specifically, in areas of program needs assessment, development and evaluation of pharmacist services and pharmacy student competencies. He and his team of researchers utilize social science methodology for examining patient perspectives, provider capabilities, outcomes of patient-provider communication and services for improving medicine use (adherence), disease and health behavior management. Dr. Shah’s research is mainly focused on developing and accessing programs for management of chronic disease conditions such as asthma, cancer and obesity/weight issues and developing student capabilities in providing quality care. Much of Dr. Shah’s research utilizes survey design principles and interview probing strategies to collect data that can be analyzed quantitatively as well qualitatively. His partnership with his colleagues in LIU Pharmacy and across the University serves as his forum for developing research teams that make a difference in the health and well-being of the society. Dr. Shah has presented his research at local, national and international conference, is an active reviewer for numerous journals and an active member of the American Pharmacists Association and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. He is also an Exam Writer for NABP conducted examinations, a Field Reviewer for AACP Continuing Education Programs and an Assessment Fellow for the Long Island University.

Research Synopsis

Pharmacists’ role in providing patient centered health care services to the American patient population has expanded in the last decade. Consequently, pharmacy academia has changed and demands that student pharmacists and graduating practitioners be competent and ready to provide patient centered culturally competent care services such as medication therapy management services and engage in public health programs. We have shown that despite positive attitudes among student pharmacists, practitioners and patients, there are critical gaps in competence, training and other barriers that need to be addressed before and during the patient care process. On an ongoing basis, through our research we aim to understand, identify and develop interventions to address these gaps.
