Physical Therapy 600 Sports Physical Therapy*
Prerequisites: Physical Therapy 153, 560, 511

Current medical aspects of sports and physical conditioning. The topics covered include normal dimensions of training performance, sport-specific injuries, taping, overuse syndromes, nutrition for health, task analysis of athletic roles, protective devices for athletics, preventative athletic programs and program planning for athletic injuries. Three credits.

Physical Therapy 601 Electroneuromyography*
Prerequisites: Physical Therapy 113, 141, 552, 561, 700A and 700B

Physiological bases and techniques of electrical evaluation of the neuromuscular system through electromyography, and nerve conduction velocity. Students learn upper- and lower-extremity tests, interpretation of reports through case studies and implications for research through literature review. Application of test results to program planning and research data collection. Three credits.

Physical Therapy 631 Clinical Practice III*
Prerequisites: Physical Therapy 532, 541, 560, 561, 562
Offered every Fall

A full-time internship emphasizing neuromuscular physical therapy. Interns will be assigned their own patient load and will be responsible, under supervision of a licensed physical therapist, for the evaluation, program planning and treatment of their clients. Six to eight weeks. Pass/Fail only. Three credits.

Physical Therapy 632 Clinical Practice IV*
Prerequisites: Physical Therapy 532, 659, 660, 680

A full-time internship with a cardiopulmonary component. The student may be placed in a variety of settings including in-patient and out-patient facilities. Interns will be assigned their own patient load and will be responsible, under supervision, for the evaluation, program planning and treatment of their clients. Six to eight weeks. Pass/Fail only. Three credits.

Physical Therapy 633 Clinical Practice V*
Prerequisites: Physical Therapy 532, 600, 601, 661, 681, 707
Offered every Fall

This final internship allows students guided selection of a specific clinical area of interest in physical therapy. Some options include: pediatrics, geriatrics, sports physical therapy, burns and research. A student may be required to have a specified internship, if the academic clinical coordinator identifies a special need for greater practice in a particular area. Six to eight weeks. Pass/Fail only. Three credits.

Physical Therapy 635 Instrumented Evaluation of Motor Function*
Prerequisites: Human anatomy, physiology, physics
Offered every Spring

The student is exposed to different types of evaluation tools in a variety of settings. Validity and reliability of tests and measurements, biomedical instrumentation, clinical objective evaluation, laboratory experience in muscle torque evaluation, ait evaluation and energy expenditure. Three credits.

Physical Therapy 640 Musculoskeletal Evaluation and Treatment Seminar I*
Prerequisites: Physical Therapy 512, 635, 701, 710 or permission of instructor

This seminar investigates the present theories of evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and diseases of the upper and lower extremities through the discussion and critical analysis of current literature. The historical perspective of the theories is addressed. Each anatomical area is addressed in reference to the theories through presentations and discussion. Emphasis is on the integration of the theories in treatment. Selected demonstrations are made of certain advanced techniques. Three credits.

Physical Therapy 645 Musculoskeletal Evaluation and Treatment Seminar II*
Prerequisites: Physical Therapy 512, 635, 701, 710 or permission of instructor

This seminar deals with the historical perspectives and development of the various theories of spinal evaluation and treatment. The strengths and weaknesses of each theory are examined from a clinical perspective through the discussion and critical analysis of current literature. The TMJ and Sacroiliac joints are addressed in this seminar along with the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. Demonstrations are made of advanced techniques. Three credits.

Historical and critical overviews of evaluation tools, treatment theories and treatment implementation as they relate to at-risk infants and the developmentally disabled. Student self-evaluation to determine direction of professional growth. Three credits.

Lifespan studies of special patient populations or problems, including neuro-anatomical and physiological concerns, ethical and legal issues, work and recreational opportunities, program design and current roles for physical therapists. Individualized assignments to meet professional goals. Three credits.

The evaluation of clients with disorders of the cardiopulmonary systems, goal setting, program planning and selection of treatment techniques. Interpretation of resting and exercise electrocardiography. Techniques and equipment used to support and augment clients+ ventilation: humidification, oxygen administration, inhaled medication and assisted mechanical ventilation. An introduction to graded exercise testing is included. Three credits in each semester.
