Library Information for Students
The purpose of this page is to provide the C.W. Post campus students
with vital information about the B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library.
We hope this will introduce you to
our library's collections, services. and departments. We invite you to
call us at 299-2305 or 2306 to set up a tour, a class or even a general
overview of what our library has to offer.
Collections
The B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library has a comprehensive collection
of over one million volumes, and over 5,000 periodical and newspaper subscriptions
in its many departments. In addition, there are nearly 700,000 items in
microform and 36,000 non-print materials. Additional information
can be found on the library's website. At this part of the website you will also find information about:
How to Find Library Materials:
- Books:
LIUCAT,
the catalog of Long
Island University libraries, is available on the web by following the link at
library.liu.edu.
It is also linked from many places around the Library Website.
Please feel free to ask in the Reference Department for help in
using the Library catalog. You may also ask in Reference for a user guide to LIUCAT
or view the web version on our website.
The online catelog itself also has help screens for doing a
basic search or
advanced search.
Book Stacks:
Circulating books are shelved on four open stack levels. The
entrance to the stacks is off the lobby
on the main floor of the Library (which also happens to be stack level 4). Our Library, as most academic libraries,
uses the Library of Congress Classsification system (a combination of letters
and numbers). Ask in Reference for the user guide to the LC system and
appropriate stack levels entitled: Finding Books: Navigating the Book Stacks or
view this user guide on our website.
There are also printed charts and guides throughout the Library to help
you determine which level your book is located on. Please bring a current
picture I.D. to obtain access to the stacks.
For example, a book with the call number PN1993.M45
is located on stack level 5. You will be on stack level 4 when you enter
the book stacks. By taking a left and taking the first staircase up – you'll
get to level 5. For the two stack levels below, take the second door down.
But there's usually a student at the entrance to give you assistance.
Checking out a book
To check a book out, you need your school
ID. Bring this to the Circulation Desk to have this card activated as your
library card.
- Periodicals:
The Library subscribes to over 3,100 newspapers, magazines, and journal
titles which are shelved in the Periodicals Department on the lower level
of the Library. The collection is particularly strong in education, psychology,
social/political science and literature.
Please note that government and
library science
periodicals are shelved in their respective departments. There
are printed listings in the Periodicals Department. You can also check
on the website to find out which periodicals will be found in this department.
For other listings of other periodical titles, check in each department
or go to the individual homepages.
Periodicals do not circulate. You must use them in the Library.
Some
may be available on the web. Ask in Reference or Periodicals for assistance.
- Vertical Files:
Vertical file material consists of pamphlets, clippings, annual reports,
and other non-book materials. The vertical files may
be found in several different departments of the Library, such as the
Center for Business Research, the
Library and Information Science Library, and the
Instructional Media Center.
- Media:
All non-print media is located in the
Instructional Media Center on
the Lower Level of the Library.
Student Services
- Library Hours:
The Library is generally open Monday-Thursday from 8am to 11pm and Friday
and Saturday from 8am to 5pm and Sunday from 12 noon to 8pm but always
check for extended and reduced hours. Visit the Library's website for any
changes in Library hours.
- Borrowing Procedures:
Currently enrolled L.I.U. students with updated, validated I.D. cards
(and alumni with alumni cards) have full borrowing privileges. The main
Circulation Desk for checking out books is located in the lobby near the
exit door. The Instructional
Media Center circulates its own materials. The normal borrowing period
for books is 28 days and you may renew for one more borrowing period. IMC
materials, other than films and videos, may be borrowed for 2 weeks; Library
and Information Science Library items circulate for 3 weeks. The
Circulation section
of our website has additional information on placing a hold, recalling a book,
overdue costs, etc.
- Reserve Collection:
Materials on reserve consist primarily of books and photocopied articles
which have been set aside at the request of faculty for the your use. Unless
otherwise indicated, the reserve status of an item automatically terminates
at the end of the semester. Books that are currently on reserve appear
in LIUCAT with a due date of 8/08/08. Most reserve material can be found at the
main Circulation Desk. For additional information on this
collection, see the Circulation section
of our website.
- Photoduplication:
Copiers are available throughout the Library to photocopy microfilm,
microfiche, books, and print materials. Each copy costs 10 cents.
- Interlibrary Loan:
Interlibrary loan expands the range of publications available to the
C.W. Post community. Students may request that publications not owned
by C.W. Post be borrowed from other libraries on a local and national
level. For further information, check out the Interlibrary Loan
webpage where you can also fill out the appropriate forms.
Items that are available
at other L.I.U. libraries may also be requested on Interlibrary Loan. If
these items are on the shelf at the other campus library, they might arrive
within the week. If not, it may be quite a bit longer. This service is more
appropriate for long term research, and it is possible that it may take
from 4-6 weeks to receive the requested items.
- Database Searching:
Free end-user searching is available to all currently
enrolled L.I.U. students. The library provides access to many databases
that are listed on our website by subject,
title, or vendor.
Workstations to access these databases are located in all
public service departments of the Library.
- Remote Access:
Students are now able to search many of LIU's electronic databases from
home via remote access.
All students who are currently enrolled in classes
are encouraged to utilize our remote access capabilities. Remember,
if you're having difficulty please contact a librarian at (516) 299-2305
or 2306.
- Instruction in Database Searching:
Students can ask in the Reference Department
about individualized instruction in the use of the campus-wide databases
and the Library's catalog, LIUCAT.
- Online Searching:
The Library offers mediated, fee-based searching of hundreds
of online databases on all subjects. This means that a librarian will search
the databases for you whether you choose to be present or not. Fees include
hourly connect rates, print charges, and telecommunications fees. Inquire
in Reference for funding options.
- Bibliographic Instruction:
Various methods of instruction are available to students. Your professors
are encouraged to bring their classes to the library for sessions targeting
research methods and materials in specific disciplines. Some request classes
on using the Library catalog, LIUCAT, the online databases, the Internet,
or on developing research strategies. Even if you've had a class and need
a refresher, come in to the Reference department and ask for help or call
Reference at x2305.
- General Tours:
We can arrange to give you a general tour of
the building and an overview of resources and services available in the
various library departments. This can also include the use of LIUCAT. Just
call Reference at x2305 or stop by the Reference Desk.
- Internet Instruction:
The Reference Librarians will give introductory
sessions to students on an individual basis or in a small group setting
on using the Internet for research purposes. Please call the Reference
Department to arrange for this type of instruction at x 2305.
How you can make the Library a better place
Student recommendations are welcomed in developing the Library collections
and services. Our aim is to support the curriculum and to anticipate faculty
and student needs, so if we don't have what you need, let us know and we'll
try to order it for you.
- Collection Development:
Recommendations
for materials to be purchased by the Library should be made to the
Acquisitions Department (x2835) or to the
Reference Department (x2305).
(Also see our Collection Policy Statement)
- Exhibits and Lecture Series:
The Library
sponsors and mounts exhibits in the Library lobby
on a regular basis throughout
the year. We welcome your suggestions and feedback. The above link also has
additional information about past library exhibits.
- Gifts to the Library:
The Acquisitions
Department of the Library welcomes donations of books, periodicals, recordings,
and other types of materials. Those items that cannot be used may be sold.
- What Else?
We are interested in what you think about us.
Let us know. Did you find the materials you needed? If not, please tell
us. Did you get the proper help you asked for? If not, why not? Talk to
us. Is there more we could be doing to serve you better? How? We want to
know. Visit our Reference website at:
