What's New?
Newsletter of the Reference Department - June 2000
Databases are always adding new titles and more often deleting useful ones.
Here are some changes that might interest you, along with some upcoming meetings
and training sessions.
Databases:
Alt-HealthWatch
has been sold to ccplanet.com, a company that focuses on alternative health, wellness
and other ecology oriented markets. After July, it will no longer be offered through the
Softline array of databases but can be accessed through the EBSCOhost service.
The New York Times is no longer available on OCLC's
FirstSearch (as of 2/29/00). OCLC recommends that we use
DataTimes,
Newspaper Abstracts,
Readers' Guide Abstracts and
Wilson Business Abstracts.
Keep in mind, we have
Lexis-Nexis Universe and
ProQuest as alternatives.
From NYLINK's Status Line:
Four databases and French and Spanish versions of online help were added to
the new FirstSearch service in December. With the addition of MLA, SocioAbs,
Sociological Abstracts and OCLC Union Lists of Periodicals,
there are now 85 databases available on the new service.
Health Reference
Center-Academic (formerly available through OCLC's FirstSearch
and through Gale Group's Infotrac) is now available only from
Infotrac. Go to the
Alphabetical List of Databases or the
Subject List of Databases to see
all of the available health sciences databases.
Another FirstSearch database - Microcomputer Abstracts has
changed its name to Internet and Personal Computing Abstracts.
At the request of a professor in the Math Department, we now have access to
MathSciNet, a database of the American Mathematical Society.
Access is university-wide and by IP recognition.
Check out tha Community

Trial Databases:
Check the Trial Databases listing on the Reference homepage for a list (with dates)
of the trials currently available and explore these databases out. Send us your input.
Currently up and running:
- Applied Science and Technology Full Text : 1983-present (until late June)
- Omnifile Full Text Mega : 1982-present (until late June)
- Web of Science : (until mid-June) - includes citation indexes: Science, Social Science, Arts & Humanities
- American National Biography (ended in May)
- Oxford English Dictionary (ended in May)
Meetings/Training/Conferences:
Watch LILRC news for EBSCO training.
NYLINK is presenting Re-Creating Reference: Information Services and New
Technologies on June 7th at Fashion Institute of Technology. Check the web for details.
You can still register for the June 16th session at the Farmingdale Public
Library on Effective Searching on New FirstSearch. Check LILRC News
or the website for specifics.
Our Annual LIU Librarians Conference will be held at the Brooklyn Campus this year
on June 9th. Join us.
Watch for a summer Teatime on Information Literacy and how it will affect our mission,
services and programs.
Web Sightings:
The battle rages between the digitaldivas.com site
(founded 1997) and Microsoft's knock off singular version -
digitaldiva.com (launched in 2000). More on this at the
Diva and Goliath section of the original site. Digitaldivas.com was created by professional
women interested in computer technology that provides visitors with articles (e.g. Guide to Online
Courses), tutorials (e.g. Creating HTML Forms), and resources (e.g. Legal and Ethical Issues on the
Internet) about computer and Internet use and applications. A nice feature of the site are the unusual
and attractive graphics and software products available for download.
Register.com is useful for verifying availability
of and registering domain names.
