Benefactors:

Donated in 1974 by The Theodore Roosevelt Association, Oyster Bay, New York.

Excerpt from the Theodore Roosevelt Association Collection Symposium and Dedication Brochure, Saturday, October 26, 1974:

"It is a very poor thing... to advance the history of great deeds done in the past as an excuse for doing poorly in the present; but it is an excellent thing to study the history of the great deeds of the past, and of the great men who did them, with an earnest desire to profit thereby so as to render better service in the present. In their essentials, the men of the present day, and the live issues of the present can be faced to better advantage by men who have in good faith studied how the leaders of the nation faced the dead issues of the past." T.R., 1905

History of the Collection:

Donated on October 26, 1974 by the Theodore Roosevelt Association in nearby Oyster Bay, this is a comprehensive collection of over 3,000 books, pamphlets and documents concerning the life, times and interests of our 26th President as well as T.R.'s rich and prolific writings. This was our Long Island President whose summer White House was Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay.

The Collection boasts such treasures as the limited first edition (one of 200) of Roosevelt's The Wilderness Hunter which is signed by him; pre-publication issuance of some of President Roosevelt's addresses "to be held in confidence" until the speech is delivered; and such a great primary resource as the Register of Commissioned and Warrant Officers of the United States Navy and Marine Corps from 1830 to 1925. In addition, the collection contains the important, informative Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal from the Winter/Spring 1976 issue (volume 1, issue 1) to the present. Founded by John A. Gable, Executive Director of the Association, this periodical is regularly sought after by researchers.

As Theodore Roosevelt was our only Long Island President, this collection becomes an important link to our other two North Shore Long Island collections: The Cedar Swamp Historical Society Collection and the Underhill Collection of Quaker literature.
