World War II movie posters were exhibited
in the Hutchins
Gallery, other areas of the C. W. Post Library, and
the Hillwood Art Museum
from September 23 to
October 20, 2002.
These vintage movie posters of the Second World War represent those films produced while the
Great Conflict was raging throughout the globe from 1941-1945. The B. Davis Schwartz
Memorial Library has 174 such posters which were culled from the library's collection of
approximately 5,000 original movie posters.
These artistic creations were displayed in the
theatres when the pictures were shown in the 40's and 50's.
 Fifty-four
of the posters will be exhibited. The time is right for such an exhibit because of the
great pride in our country after the unspeakable tragedy of
September 11, as well as a deeper appreciation of that "greatest
generation" who unreservedly fought a necessary and just war against murderous
tyrannies grinding their way around the world.
During the war, movie audiences were lured inside by the poster advertisments, mesmerized
in the darkened temple of their local Bijou, and thrilled with our struggles against the forces of evil
in such screen classics as Bataan, The Fighting Sullivans and The Moon Is Down,
shivered at the dangers lurking behind the scenes in such spy thrillers as The Conspirators and
Man Hunt, escaped into laughter with Buck Privates and Miracle of Morgan's Creek,
broke out into song with such musical moral lifters as This Is the Army and Follow the Boys,
and shared the trials on the home front in such heart-tugging dramas as Sunday Dinner
for a Soldier and I'll Be Seeing You. Such movies are promoted and celebrated in these posters in
an artful, graphic and fun way.
Original news broadcasts and radio shows will provide an audio backdrop. Movies will be shown.

Social Spectrum." There will be a showing of the war film "Bataan".

October 3, 2002 at 12:30pm. "Battle Pieces: How Poets Responded to the War."
This program, which is free and open to the public, is supported in part
by the New York Council for the Humanities.
