Best Practice Seminar Series in Education and Counseling
Spring 2008 Offerings
In response to the needs for professional development, the Rockland Graduate Campus of Long Island University is proud to offer the Seminar Series in Best Practices for Spring 2008.
This series which is being offered to graduate students, teachers, counselors and teaching assistants has been designed to address the following key issues:

School districts are required to have students meet high standards.

New York State has a professional development requirement of 175 hours over five years.

The influx of new teachers into our school system establishes the need for high quality professional development in best practices.

Professional development enables teachers and counselors to put theory into practice so that they understand where to focus instruction and how to employ effective methods that make a significant difference in student achievement.
All seminars will be held at the Rockland Graduate Campus located at 70 Route 340, Orangeburg, NY (exit 5N off Palisades Parkway).
Seminar Descriptions:
- Tuesday March 4, 2008, 5-7:00 p.m.
New Trends in Teenage Alcohol and Substance Abuse
This informative presentation will address new trends in teenage alcohol and substance abuse which will include recent statistics. The relationship between mental health issues and substance abuse will also be discussed. Maureen Hyatt, LCSW works with the Mental Health Association of Rockland County as the Recovery Services Director, and has extensive experience working in both inpatient and outpatient Mental Health settings. Chi Sigma Iota, the Counseling honor society, was instrumental in arranging this seminar.

SmartBoards: Infusing Media into the Classroom
Paul Garofano, Instructional Technology Facilitator in the Ramapo Central School District, will be back to offer an introduction to SmartBoards and their effective use in the classroom. Participants will be given the opportunity to use a SmartBoard to create learning activities fostering student interaction with media components and Smart Technologies.

Legal Issues in Higher Education Counseling
The session will focus on the practical, ethical, and legal issues faced by counselors and other mental health professionals practicing in higher education settings. The presentation will discuss the interplay between the counselor’s ethical obligations and the laws governing privacy, civil rights and the student’s right to access education. Carolyn Reinach Wolf, a lawyer with a large New York law firm, will outline the tools and information counselors and institutions need to balance the rights of students suffering from mental illness or related issues, with the duty to protect that individual and the community at large.

Brain Matters: Fad or Foundation?
This multi media session presented by Dr. Mary Jean Marsico, Asst. Supt., Special Student Services and Catherine O’Brien, Supervisor for Special Ed., Rockland BOCES, will help you to identify instructional practices that are best aligned with recent research on the brain and learning. Participants will experience first hand the use of brain compatible instructional strategies and their effectiveness with students. A thorough understanding of this research is critical to becoming an effective educator in today’s schools.
Fees:
LIU students and alumni: $10 per session.
All other educators and counselors: $35 per session.
