Session on Bipolar
Children Launches New ‘Best Practice’ Seminar
Series at Rockland Campus of Long Island University
Professional development series includes
seminars on
autism, teaching writing & children in bereavement
Orangeburg, N.Y. -- Bipolar disorder is on
the rise in children and adolescents. A seminar on the increasing
incidence of the disorder and ways to recognize and treat
it will kick off the new Best Practice Seminars in Education
and Counseling, a series of professional development events
for local educators, counselors, graduate students and teaching
assistants at the Rockland Graduate Campus of Long Island
University.
Dr. Karen Oates, president and CEO of the Mental
Health Association of Rockland County, will present “Bipolar
Disorder in Children and Adolescents” on Monday,
October 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Rockland Graduate
Campus.
Upon completion of each seminar, participants
will receive a professional development certificate for three
hours of study applicable (subject to district approval) toward
the New York State requirement for 175 hours of professional
development over a five-year period.
Other upcoming titles include:

“Autism, Part I: Nature, Needs and Causes”
with Dr. Mary Jean Marsico, assistant superintendent of
special services at Rockland County BOCES, and Catherine
O’Brien, BOCES supervisor of special services, on
Wednesday, Nov. 1 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

“Teaching Craft in the Writing Workshop”
with Patricia Vitale-Reilly, a noted writing consultant
to schools in the tri-state area and co-founder of LitLife,
on Monday, Nov. 13 from 4:30 to 7:30
p.m.

“How to Work with Children, Adolescents and Parents
During Bereavement” with Sharami Kerr and Bruce
Page of Healing Hearts, a program of United Hospice of
Rockland, on Tuesday, Dec. 12 from 5
to 8 p.m.
Fees for the seminars are $10 for Long Island
University graduate students and alumni and $35 for teachers,
counselors and the general public. All seminars will be held
at the Rockland Graduate Campus located at 70 Route 340, Orangeburg,
N.Y.
