The Institute for Sustainable Development is working in cooperation with the wider Long Island University community to invite graduating Seniors at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University to participate in the Graduation Pledge, a declaration of commitment to social and environmental values.

What is the Graduation Pledge?

The Graduation Pledge is a voluntary declaration made by students to maintain socially conscious values as they move transition from academe to their new work environments. Ultimately, the Graduation Pledge is an affirmation of students’ social and environmental commitments.

The pledge is a simply worded statement:

"I pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will try to improve these aspects of any organizations for which I work."

The pledge is voluntary. The pledge is a grassroots initiative embracing a pro-active declaration about social and environmental commitments. Graduates from more than 70 colleges and universities from across the United States are participating in the Graduation Pledge. Long Island University’s Southampton Campus already participates in the Graduation Pledge, with dozens of graduating seniors "pledging" during the May 2002 graduation ceremony. The Institute for Sustainable Development plans to expand this initiative to include the C.W. Post campus.
