Service Learning
Contribute to the well being of the community while earning practical experience through the Brenda Pillors Athsma Education Program and the LIU Brooklyn Health and Wellness Institute.
Respiratory care professionals treat patients who exhibit a range of diverse health issues including asthma, pneumonia, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer as well as those who are having respiratory problems related to trauma, strokes, heart attacks, and premature birth.
Through classroom, laboratory and diverse clinical site practicum, students develop the necessary health care knowledge, bedside skills and problem-solving abilities to serve the health needs of patients from newborns to the elderly. They are prepared to manage both acute and chronic diseases that affect the cardiopulmonary system as well as trauma, sub-acute disease, and public health issues from asthma to tuberculosis.
The four-year B.S. in Respiratory Care (also known as Respiratory Therapy), is designed to provide students with educational and clinical competence. It emphasizes comprehension, versatility and advanced clinical knowledge. The two-year, Pre-Professional Phase of the program consists of preparation in the basic sciences and in mathematics as well as the humanities and social sciences, providing students with a broad-based, liberal arts foundation.
During the Professional Phase of the program – usually years 3 and 4 – students are engaged in the theoretical, practical and clinical aspects of adult, pediatric and neonatal respiratory care. They gain an in-depth knowledge of clinical science and its application in health care.
Graduates of LIU Brooklyn’s four-year B.S. in Respiratory Care program are eligible to take the credentialing exams set forth by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) (www.nbrc.org). To earn respiratory therapy credential necessary for state licensure graduates are required to take the Therapist Multiple Choice (TMC) examination. The TMC examination determines whether the credential earned will be a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) at the low cut score or earns the eligibility to become a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) when the high cut score is attained. RRT candidates who have earned the high cut score on the TMC must successfully pass the Clinical Simulation Examination (CSE) through the NBRC to be recognized as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). The CRT and the RRT are used for all therapists wishing to practice under licensure with the Office of Professions in New York State (www.op.nysed.gov).
