Advanced Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis

The Advanced Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis is designed for individuals who hold a masters degree in education, psychology, school psychology, or behavior analysis (or a masters degree in a related field approved by the New York State Education Department and/or the Behavior Analyst Certification Board) and who intend to become a Licensed Behavior Analyst in New York and Board Certified Behavior Analyst  (27 credits), or are seeking only the Board Certified Behavior Analyst® credential (18 credits).  

Applicants who have master's degrees in fields other than education, psychology, or school psychology (i.e., the master's degree program name does not include the words "education", "psychology", or "school psychology") , or applicants who have degrees/diplomas that were awarded by institutions outside of the United States should immediately contact Dr. Bryan J. Blair to discuss additional application requirements.

Applicants who intend to practice ABA in New York upon completion of the Advanced Certificate must pursue the NY LBA pathway.  Applicants who intend to practice ABA in another state upon completion of the Advanced Certificate may pursue the BCBA-only option (review state-by-state licensing information).

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board®, Inc. has verified the following courses toward the coursework requirements for eligibility to take the Board Certified Behavior Analyst® examination. Applicants will need to meet additional requirements before they can be deemed eligible to take the examination.

• CSP 802 Applied Behavior Analysis III
• CSP 803 Applied Behavior Analysis IV
• CSP 804 Special Topics in Behavior Analysis (Topic: Ethics)

Admissions Requirements

Application Materials

All candidates must submit the following:

1. A completed LIU/Brooklyn graduate admissions application, including a personal statement
2. Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate study
3. A current resume (curriculum vitae)
4. Two letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the applicant’s work or academic performance (i.e., employer, supervisor, former professor).

Interview

After a thorough examination of application materials, ABA faculty interview selected applicants.  Interviews take place throughout the fall and spring semesters (and as needed during the summer). Interviews are approximately one hour in length.

Interviews typically involve responses to questions pertaining to the applicant's individual, educational, and professional experiences that have contributed to their desire to pursue graduate study in applied behavior analysis and questions pertaining to their educational and career goals. Time is also allotted for applicants to ask questions of the faculty about the program and the University.

Applicants are evaluated on verbal and non-verbal communication skills, foundational analytic skills, interpersonal interactions with staff, and appropriateness of responses.

The Review and Notification Process

Graduate applications are submitted to the LIU Brooklyn Campus Admissions Office and forwarded to the ABA Faculty once they are complete. The application form, personal statement, all transcripts, letters of recommendation, and resume must be received by Admissions before the applicant review process begins.

ABA faculty members review completed applications that have been forwarded from Admissions.  ABA faculty members then contact applicants whom they have selected to be interviewed and interviews are scheduled. The remaining applicants are notified that they are not accepted. Applicants who are not accepted may request recommendations for strengthening their application for future submission. Applicants who seek to be reconsidered for acceptance in a future semester may submit an updated application at that time, with indication in the personal statement of how the applicant responded to the direction provided by the faculty when not previously accepted to the program.

Within approximately one month after being interviewed, applicants are informed of their acceptance status.

The ABA Certificate Program at LIU Brooklyn is a New York State Registered Program that leads to a Professional License in Behavior Analysis.

All applicants are strongly encouraged to review the NY Licensed Behavior Analyst pathways to licensure and the BACB pathways to certification.
