Description

Jose Tello is an Associate Professor of Biology in the Department of Life Sciences at LIU Brooklyn. He received a B.S. in Biology (1992) from Universidad Ricardo Palma in Lima (Peru), a M.S. in Ecology, Evolution, and Systematics (1996) from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution (2004) from The University of Illinois at Chicago. His research focuses on molecular systematics, evolution, and biogeography of birds. He studies relationships across a broad hierarchy of birds from entire families to within species. A central goal of his work is to understand the origins of biodiversity and the biogeographic history of the Neotropical region including macroevolutionary patterns such as behavioral, ecological, and morphological diversification. Dr. Tello has research associate appointments with the American Museum of Natural History in New York and the Field Museum in Chicago. He has established collaborations with colleagues from those institutions and others from Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. Dr. Tello teaches undergraduate courses in biology, evolution, genetics, and a course seminar on human biological variation.
