Lessons are designed to create a positive environment that will help each participant develop water skills at their own comfort level, all the while spending quality time together. Using hands on approach, parents will be instructed on how to properly guide and teach their children to swim.

Guppy (Level 1) (Ages 3 - 6) Guppy Level 1 swimming classes are designed to help young swimmers feel comfortable in the water. Through the use of activities and assisted support, class emphasizes numerous swimming techniques such as: how to properly enter and exit the pool water using ladder, steps or side, blowing bubbles through mouth and nose, bobbing, retrieving submerged objects, front and back glides and floats, recovering to vertical position, rolling from front to back and back to front, and introduction to front crawl stroke and back crawl stroke.

Minnow (Level 2/3) (Ages 4 - 8) Minnow Level 2 and 3 swimming classes are geared towards more experienced swimmers who wish to improve upon the skills they already possess. Students learn more advanced swimming methods such as proper breathing techniques (rhythmic breathing), the ability to change directions while on back and front, as well as treading water in the deep and shallow ends of the pool. Swim instructors introduce and reaffirm numerous strokes on front and back with an emphasis on front crawl stroke, back crawl stroke, elementary backstroke, and side-stroke.

Shark (Level 4) (Ages 6 - 12) Shark Level 4 swimming classes are the most advanced swimming classes LIU Children's Academy has to offer. Within this level, there is a strong emphasis on stroke development and improvement. Through the use of lap swim, drills, games, and activities, students gain confidence and improve upon their front crawl stroke, back crawl stroke, elementary back stroke, and side stroke, as well as introduced to the breast stroke and butterfly stroke.

Gymnastics for Kids (Ages 3 - 6) This introductory gymnastics program for children ages three to six is designed to help your child build strength, flexibility and self-confidence all while channeling their excess energy! Independent enough to attend classes without parents, young children learn best in a structured environment, which is why our gymnastics activities are combined with healthy doses of fun and fitness.

Mandarin Chinese (Ages 3 - 6) Children are introduced to a beginning Mandarin Chinese class developing basic in listening, speaking, reading and writing Chinese. By using pinyin and traditional characters, children will be surrounded by various games, songs, visual aids, and play. Language lessons are related to numbers, greetings and farewell, colors, people and objects, animals, family members, transportation and more. If you’ve ever wondered how your child might fare learning Chinese, this introductory class will provide young learners with a gentle beginning to the world’s most common language.

Strength + Conditioning (Ages 7 - 12) Fitness, good practice habits and a consistent training regimen are essential to any successful athletic pursuit. Using a series of exercises emphasizing good mechanics, our CrossFit class, tailored for young athletes ages 7 to 12, will result in enhanced performance as well as fewer sports-related injuries. CrossFit for Kids is designed to be fun for all ages. Challenging exercises are engineered to change old fitness habits and provide a foundation for continued all-around fitness. Scalable for any age or experience level, CrossFit for Kids emphasizes exercises that are simple, inexpensive and requires little or no equipment. The ultimate outcome is to provide participants with a foundation to be fit and physically active for life. Participants will need to wear appropriate workout gear and bring a water bottle for hydration.

Parent & Me Ceramics (Ages 3 - 6) Clay is an enthralling and tactile material for children to explore. Working with this versatile medium will advance creativity and imagination while refining important motor skills. Focusing on hand-building pottery skills, parents and their children will be introduced to a new project or idea in each class. By presenting different clay mediums and techniques, participants will have ample opportunity to create fun, unique projects such as sculptural self-portraits or animal coil pots. (Please note a total materials fee of $20 for this course)

Parent + Me Music (Ages 3 - 6)
Parents rather than just listen to music, why not look to make some yourself — along with you child! Making music is crucial for children’s overall development, and our early-childhood music education class welcomes families with children (ages 3 - 6) to move to joyous rhythms while learning about core musical concepts. Parents or caregivers and their children learn about beat, rhythm, melody and harmony in a welcoming, collaborative environment where all are encouraged to express their inner musician.

Parent & Me Yoga (Ages 3 - 6) Parent & Me Yoga is a fun way to be active and practice yoga while enjoying quality time with your little one. Slither like snakes, walk like spiders and hop like frogs as you embark on an engaging and dynamic yoga adventure with your child. Classes will incorporate music, storytelling and partner play to make traditional yoga poses and breathing techniques accessible to both you and your child and foster connection, movement and great fun! Mats provided on the premises. Dress comfortably.

LEGO Mindstorms Robotics (Ages 7 - 12) This next level class will focus on the capabilities of the LEGO NXT robotics kit as well as LEGO Mindstorms software. The concepts to be covered over five weeks include: storing elastic potential energy, transferring direction of motion with the use of gears, application of motors in robotic design, use of touch, ultrasonic, light, and rotational sensors.

Build-A-Robot (Ages 7 - 12) This hands-on class will introduce students to fundamental principals regarding electronics, motors, simple audio devices and gears by exploring and deconstructing everyday items. By the end of a 10-week session, each participant will take home an analog robot that they built from scratch that includes a motor, LED, and a recordable audio chip and is both functional and able to successfully perform specific challenges (like BattleBots). Other topics explored in this course: principles of analog robotic design, including circuits, relays and transistors, resistors and capacitors. Activity fees are $20 for the robotics kit.

Video Game Design (Ages 7 - 12) Playing games is a universal and timeless activity that allows children to greatly improve cognitive functions. Our basic video game design class is newly expanded to encompass a wide range of game variants—including board and card games—as well as GameStar Mechanic and Scratch, online game authoring environments. Providing with a collaborative environment for designing and developing games, prospective designers will use game design tools, techniques, and strategies while learning the importance of technology and creativity in the game development process.

Kids Make Movies (Ages 7 - 12) This course provides young filmmakers with all the equipment, skills and inspiration necessary to realize their movie-making ideas. Through hands-on instruction, participants will hone their writing, shooting, editing and directing skills. They are also exposed to storytelling/storyboarding concepts as well as an overview of film equipment. Sessions will focus on animation, using stop-motion techniques to make time-based media as accessible as possible. Students will also learn about the craft of filmmaking, including working with digital video cameras, lighting and actors.

Print Making (Ages 7 - 12) Since Johannes Gutenberg invented his printing press more almost 700 years ago, the idea of easily reproduced multiples has taken hold of artists’ imaginations. In a compact way, our print making class seeks to capture the spirt of the original master: making easily produced—maintaining the original’s fidelity—copies of specific designs. Participants will be introduced to the basic concepts of how first to create a reproducible artwork of their own, and then the means and materials needed to make multiple copies of that original work.

Toymaking (Ages 7 - 12) Every kid loves playing with toys, but what will it be like to make your own? Working with a variety of materials—including wire, foil, acrylic paints, and the secret ingredient: Super Sculpey—participants use their imaginations and fine motor skills to craft a special toy of their very own. Super heroes, princesses, robots, vehicles—even politicians!—are all fair game for our eager young craftsmen.

Spanish Early Leaners (Ages 3 - 6) Young children are introduced to Spanish in an immersive environment filled with age-appropriate games, songs, visual aids, and play.
