Brian N. Sweeney

Associate Professor of Sociology

B.A., Ohio Wesleyan UniversityM.A., Ph.D., Indiana University, Bloomington

Description

Dr. Sweeney joined the LIU Post faculty in Fall 2007 after finishing a Ph.D. at Indiana University, Bloomington. Dr. Sweeney teaches courses on youth, gender, sexuality and education. His research mainly investigates gender, sexuality, and peer cultures, old and young.

Some of the issues Dr. Sweeney explores in his research include how men view appropriate sexual behavior for men and women, how men's sexual respect and disrespect toward women is influenced by peer cultures, and how men's behavior and notions of women's sexuality affect women's sexual agency and subjectivity.

More recently Dr. Sweeney has turned his interest in sexuality and peer cultures toward an investigation of aging among sexual minorities. He is currently collecting data in multiple Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (or NORCs) to investigate how friendship can promote healthy aging among GLBT elders.
