Description

Dr. Qiping Zhang is an associate professor in the Palmer School of Library and Information Science at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, where she also serves as director of the Usability Lab. Dr. Zhang holds a Ph.D. (under the guidance of Dr. Gary Olson and Dr. Judy Olson) and an M.S. in information and library studies from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and an M.S. (under the guidance of Professor Su Wang) and a B.S. in cognitive psychology from Peking University in Beijing, China. Prior to joining Long Island University in 2006, she was an assistant professor in the College of Information Science and Technology at Drexel University.

Dr. Zhang's general research areas are human-computer interaction (HCI), knowledge management (KM), social informatics and distance learning. Her primary interests lie in the areas of computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) and computer-mediated communication. Specifically, she is interested in facilitating productive collaborations of individuals who are geographically and culturally distributed. Her current projects include investigation on the effects of culture on computer-mediated communication and trust repairing, knowledge sharing, cross-cultural comparison of social tagging of photos, blog use in education, and learning in virtual environments. Dr. Zhang has published numerous papers in the areas of HCI, CSCW, KM, social informatics and related disciplines.

Dr. Zhang also is dedicated to serving Long Island University and the professional community. In the Palmer School, she is chair of the Curriculum Committee, a member of Doctoral Committee and a faculty co-adviser of the student chapter of the American Society of Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T). On the University level, she is the co-chair of the Committee on Committees; a member of the Committee on Calendar, Scheduling and Space Utilization; a member of the University Assessment Committee; and a member of the Blended Learning Initiative Committee. Her work on behalf of professional associations includes serving as an invited panel organizer for ACM Computer Supported Cooperative Work 2010, “What’s up with Culture?” and as a workshop co-organizer on “Cultural and Collaborative Technology” at CHI (Computer-Human Interaction) 2007 and on “Revisiting Online Trust: Concepts, Implication and Future Direction” at CSCW 2006. Dr. Zhang was also a program committee member and poster co-chair of the 2009 ACM Workshop on Intercultural Collaboration. With ASIS&T, Dr. Zhang is the current student chapter representative of the national association and the past chair of the organization’s special interest group on knowledge management.
